Being right on the water I'm getting less snow than inland areas, the roads are being plowed consistently and the belt is moving along at a good clip. As far as I know all trains are up and running.

****UPDATE *** UPDATE *** UPDATE It has stopped snowing completely and the snow is disappearing fast.  I was thinking the hill acrost the street might look a little cute covered in snow but now it's just a big mound of dead grass again. The roads are TOTALY clear and everyones back to doing 70 on the belt.  ~Anna

Hey there, I'm new here, sort of new to the whole steampunk thing in general but it's fascinated me for a while now. Anyway, my mom is one of those insanely crafty people who seems to be able to make just about anything she sets her mind to, so I'd been prodding at her for over a year to try something in the goth or steampunk style.

I think she's done pretty well. You can find the stuff we have for sale, here:
http://www.etsy.com/shop/houseofdecay

And pics of the rest of the things she's made, here;

Currently we just got ahold of a watch repair kit and were able to dissect several old pocket watches, so we should have more with watch movements and various parts featured, shortly.

I, of course, would like to visit.

Socotra Island

Is off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean and one of the most isolated places on Earth. There are many wonderous facts about this little known place, but the one I find most interesting is that plants and birds found no where else in the whole world call Socotra home. More than 800 plants, in fact,  ONLY and exclusivly grow there, one of which is the dragon's blood tree. It's umbrella shaped, and exudes a red sap that is used in medicine and dye. Atop its umbrella can be found the rarest birds on the planet... the Socotra Sunbird, the Socotra Starling, the Socotra Grosbeak and the Socotra Sparrow.

There are about 50,000 people on the island and they speak Soqotri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soqotri_language (an unwritten dialect of Arabic) The islanders grow dates, rear livestock, fish and also enjoy a recent upswing in tourism. Seriously, how badly do you want to visit? I can't stop day dreaming about it!!!

Since I'm not the only one who likes pixel-hording and dressing little things up... www.gaiaonline.com is another website that has Steampunk items for you customizable character! You can change gender, skin, eyes, mouth, and hair at first.  Then you do things around the site or play flash games to get gold.  Gold gets items that dress your avatar, or home, or car, or aquarium xD A few more examples under the cut )

I have no idea, I just know they were fun to build. I was lucky enough to come across a handful of projector lens at an antique market recently, and knew I could do something with them... with some wet-molded leather and some polished brass bits, I was off and running.

Oh yeah, there's more... )

During this holiday season, I noticed more than a few comments from customers shopping for gifts a Sock Dreams that stated they could not find sock garters at any brick-and-mortar department/clothing stores, and they had done an online search and were happy to have found us. A couple of them even said the salespeople looked at them as if they were crazy! I don't know if it's entirely true, but thought it worth bringing up here, because we do sell a variety of sock garters, some of which are custom made for Sock Dreams. You can see them all here: www.sockdreams.com/_shop/pages/accessories_cat_CategoryID_74.php But of possible particular interest to this community are the ones at the top, the Geared Up Garters. They are a bit on the pricey side because they are handmade for us and in limited supply. The lovely lady who makes these and other garters on our site made a custom one for my derby! , I'd like to thank everyone in this community who has ordered from Sock Dreams over this past year, getting us through a bit of a slow spell due to the recession and making this holiday season a record year! I'm certain there will be another discount code given exclusively to Steampunk Fashion members in the new year... Happy Holidays to Everyone!

Edwardian Ball 2010

• My Victorian Clock is in a festive new @Etsy treasury, 'A Christmas Carol' - http://ow.ly/N8g0 (Please to be clicking and commenting.)
• RT @tyrsalvia: It occurred to me last night: this is my life. This is adulthood. This is what I was preparing for. And? It's pretty awesome.
• More reasonable, more inept, more indolent, I have preferred to write notes upon imaginary books. ~Jorge Luis Borges (via @EricOrchard)
• Must have tea now.
• Splendid! 2010 Edwardian Ball poster: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nullalux/4193743478/
• Tea achieved. Also, wasabi.
• Finished my last teaching day for the next three weeks. I'll miss the little dears.
