I, of course, would like to visit.
Socotra IslandIs off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean and one of the most isolated places on Earth. There are many wonderous facts about this little known place, but the one I find most interesting is that plants and birds found no where else in the whole world call Socotra home. More than 800 plants, in fact, ONLY and exclusivly grow there, one of which is the dragon's blood tree. It's umbrella shaped, and exudes a red sap that is used in medicine and dye. Atop its umbrella can be found the rarest birds on the planet... the Socotra Sunbird, the Socotra Starling, the Socotra Grosbeak and the Socotra Sparrow. There are about 50,000 people on the island and they speak Soqotri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soqotri_language (an unwritten dialect of Arabic) The islanders grow dates, rear livestock, fish and also enjoy a recent upswing in tourism. Seriously, how badly do you want to visit? I can't stop day dreaming about it!!! Tags: strange fruit, travel
